The Home Secretary will say the UK asylum system is “fundamentally broken” as she promises to introduce a new one that is “firm and fair”.
In a speech at the Conservative Party conference, Priti Patel will pledge to undertake “the largest overhaul of our asylum system in decades”.
Ms. Patel will say that, under Tory’s leadership, Britain “offers and will always protect when people’s freedoms are turned off”.
She will tell those attending the online conference: “A fair asylum system should provide a safe haven for those fleeing persecution, oppression or tyranny.
“But not ours. Because our asylum system is fundamentally broken. And we have a responsibility to act.”
Ms. Patel will say: “From the eviction of Ugandan Asians from a repressive regime, to the proud relocation of more Syrian refugees than in any other EU country, to helping activists fleeing political persecution in Hong Kong.
“Under conservative leadership, the UK has and will always offer refuge when people’s freedoms are turned off.
“So I’m going to introduce a new system that is firm and fair. Fair and compassionate to those who need our help. Fair by welcoming people in safe and legal ways.
“But firm, because we will stop the abuse of the broken system. Solid because we will deter those who come here illegally from making endless legal claims in order to stay.
“And firm, because we will speed up the removal of those who are not entitled to protection. After decades of inactivity by successive governments, we will face the moral, legal, and practical problems of this broken system. Because what exists now is neither solid nor fair.
“And I will legislate to meet this obligation. I will take whatever steps are necessary to fix this broken system. This is the biggest overhaul of our asylum system in decades. “
The Home Secretary will swear to “speed up” the operational response to illegal migration.
She will say, “We will continue to hunt down the criminal gangs that bring people into our country.
“I will continue to use the full strength of our excellent National Crime Agency and intelligence services to pursue them.
“Every week we will immediately give back those who come here illegally and break our rules.
“And we will examine all practical measures and options to prevent illegal migration.”
