A mother and baby have died after her estranged husband allegedly poisoned their food and the death drank the toxins through their breast milk.
Josieli Lopes, 36, was breastfeeding her son after eating meat that was allegedly poisoned by her estranged husband who was planning to kill her when he discovered she had a lover to move in with.
The estranged husband, who was not named, was supposed to move out of his apartment in the Brazilian seaside resort of Itapema, but is said to have decided to kill her when he discovered their affair.
When the nursing mother collapsed with a “mysterious illness” caused by the poison, the 34-year-old is said to have offered to take her and the baby to the hospital.
Instead, he drove them to a remote jungle location and buried them both in the ground when he was sure they were dead.
The victims were reported missing on September 15, and he was arrested for confessing to murdering them a week later.
Their bodies were found buried on September 22nd in the forested jungle in Rio dos Cedros, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.
The alleged killer told police that he poisoned her with a piece of meat but didn’t expect it to be passed on to the baby through her breast milk if she fed the child soon after, reports ND +.
He cynically offered to help them by driving them to the hospital, but instead drove them 115 km into the jungle and buried them.
When questioned, he emphasized that the child’s murder was accidental and later showed the police where the bodies were buried.
Suspicions rose after the suspect sent messages to the victim’s family from her phone following the murder, making mysterious comments about her move to Rio Grande do Sul.
When the family tried to call her back, she was no longer available.
Ms. Lopes’s teenage son warned after deciding the message looked like it was written by someone else.
Police chief Diogo Medeiros said the suspect’s testimony was confusing and that there were loopholes in his story during the interrogation.
The investigation is still ongoing.
