She may be one of the few female plumbers in Pontyberem, Llanelli, but 30 year old mom Gemma has a balanced motherhood with working in a male dominated industry.
actually WalesOnline Reports Gemma, who works as a self-employed heating fitter, is one of the leading plumbers for female customers in the region.
As a 15-year-old, her father advised her to marry a plumber as the job paid well. However, Gemma got the virus and went to college to study plumbing and although she is the only woman she says she had a great time and being in a group of men didn’t bother her.
Gemma was recognized by college for her dedication to the craft, won the Welsh National Plumbing Competition and has continued to excel in the craft throughout her eight years.
Later, when Gemma became pregnant with her son, she wondered how she would get along with motherhood and work. So four years ago she decided to start her own business, GCI Plumbing, so she could take care of her children – and it turned out to be better than she’d ever imagined.
She said, “When you do something you enjoy, there is passion to do your best to move on and improve yourself. As a woman, I want women to show them that they are doing it themselves I think a lot of women hold back from work because they may worry that it won’t fit in, so hopefully it will inspire other women to be a successful woman in my job. “
Gemma has built a strong customer base with her company and recently hired her first female apprentice.
She also asked her local college if anyone would be interested in helping a woman with an education.
She said, “I would definitely like to hire more women in the future, definitely just to help them. If you want to stay with me or do your own thing, I’ll be happy to give you the guidance you need. “
Gemma’s hard work and determination paid off as she reached the semifinals of the prestigious Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2021 competition.
