ITV’s Coronation Street has highest crime rate in soapland – but Channel 4’s Hollyoaks named 'deadliest’ soap

If you’re a soap fan you already know that the shows are full of villainous characters and deadly crimes, but of all the lingering dramas, which one would you say is the best?

Buzz Bingo have analyzed every crime and murder committed on Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and EastEnders since they first appeared on our screens.

It turns out that Hollyoaks soap tops the list of the UK’s most murderous soaps.

With 85 murders in just 26 running years – that’s more than 3 murders a year – you certainly don’t want to be a resident of the Chester village anytime soon.

The Yorkshire Dales village of Emmerdale follows in second place with 43 deaths and murders since it first aired in 1972.

EastEnders’ Albert Square, which has been on screens since 1985, has seen 42 murders while the cobblestone streets of 36 Coronation Street could be seen.

You definitely don’t want to attend any of the Christmas or Halloween soaps either, as both December and October are the worst months for death in the soaps.

Who Has Been Called the Soap’s Greatest Killer?

Hollyoaks made a whopping 60 percent of the top 10, with The Gloved Hand Killer topping the list as the biggest killer of all four soaps with 7 murders.

Many fans may remember the Gloved Hand Killer became known as Lindsey Roscoe (aka Butterfield) – who murdered her victims by injecting them with a deadly brew.

Two characters from Emmerdale and EastEnders made it into the top 10, but, surprisingly, Coronation Street didn’t even get a look at it.

Here is the full top 10 list:

  1. Gloved hand killer – Hollyoaks – 7 murders

  2. Brenda McQueen – Hollyoaks – 6 Murders

  3. Silas Blissett – Hollyoaks – 5 Murders

  4. Cameron Campbell – Hollyoaks – 4 Murders

  5. Lachlen White – Emmerdale – 4 Murders

  6. Brendan Brady – Hollyoaks – 3 Murders

  7. Cameron Murray – Emmerdale – 3 Murders

  8. Gray Atkins – EastEnders – 3 murders

  9. Janine Butcher – EastEnders – 3 Murders

  10. Niall Rafferty – Hollyoaks – 3 Murders

Which soap characters committed the most crimes?

Manchester-based Coronation Street soap is officially the worst soap for crime – which isn’t surprising considering it’s the longest of the four soaps.

Since it first aired on ITV in 1960, the drama has committed 467 cobblestone crimes.

From attempted murders to extortion, theft, kidnapping and assault, Corrie has seen everything and Walford’s Eastenders follows with 437 crimes.

Here are the 10 most prolific criminals in EastEnders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, and Emmerdale:

  1. Pat Phelan – Coronation Street – 22 Crimes

  2. Phil Mitchell – EastEnders – 21 Crimes

  3. Steve Owen – EastEnders – 18 crimes

  4. Den Watts – EastEnders – 18 crimes

  5. Debbie Dingle – Emmerdale – 18 Crimes

  6. Kim Tate – Emmerdale – 18 Crimes

  8. Derek Branning – EastEnders – 17 crimes

  9. Chris Tate – Emmerdale – 17 Crimes

  10. Eric Pollard – Emmerdale – 17 Crimes

Soap fans won’t be surprised to learn that Corries Pat Phelan would be the villain who faces the longest prison sentence for all of his crimes – 278 years total!
