President-elect Joe Biden has asked President Trump to step up as clashes between Trump supporters and police in Washington DC continue.
He has called the violent protests against the US Capitol an “attack on the most sacred American corporation: the conduct of people’s business”.
Mr Biden also called for President Donald Trump to immediately deliver a televised address urging his supporters to end what he called an “unprecedented attack” as pro-Trump protesters forcibly occupy the US Capitol.
Sky News reports that an improvised explosive device was also found on the premises, the details of which are not yet known.
Thousands of officers are said to descend on Capitol Hill when the National Guard was activated.
It comes as the mob continues to clash on the steps of the Capitol Building and a woman is shot dead on the premises.
Police officers were also injured and at least one was taken to hospital.
Joe Biden’s message was followed by a pre-recorded message from President Trump telling his supporters, “It is time to go home.”
A few hours ago, Trump supporters broke barricades in violent clashes between them and police in Washington DC.
A protester broke through the floor of the house and an armed stalemate ensued in which members of the house were asked to get on the floor and under their seats.
Both houses of Congress abruptly withdrew as they discussed the election of the electoral college to give Joe Biden the presidency.
Confusion reigned in the chamber of the house when the Capitol doors locked and the debate broke off.
