Ms. Harris was sworn in by Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the US Supreme Court.
Ms. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, held the Bibles when she took the oath.
Just before she took her oath, Pop Lady Gaga took the stage for a performance.
The pop star sang the national anthem. The Democrat supporter wore a black and red ball gown that was decorated with a large golden dove of peace.
Just before Kamala Harris was sworn in to Senator Roy Blunt, the January 6 attack on the Capitol said “reminds us that a government that wants to balance and control itself is both fragile and resilient”.
Senator Roy Blunt, the top Republican on the Senate committee who spoke before Joe Biden took office as US president, has called this a “moment of unity”.
Meanwhile, prior to Joe Biden’s inauguration as US President, Senator Amy Klobuchar said the Capitol siege two weeks ago “made us feel responsible as US citizens.”
After Kamala Harris was sworn in, Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “Congratulations, Mrs. Vice President.”
US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts will read the oath of office to US President-elect Joe Biden.
