GMB presenter Kate Garraway gave a heartbreaking update on husband Derek’s condition when she returned to the ITV show this morning.
Kate said she has not been able to see Derek Draper, 53, since Christmas as he is hospitalized in a coma and suffering from the effects of Covid.
When she speaks this morning, she says she feared Derek might get worse. He was hospitalized early last year after contracting the virus and putting him in a coma The mirror.
He shocked hospital staff in October by speaking for the first time – whispering that he was in pain – but he remains in a form of coma known as PDOC (Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness), which means he’s in general not reacted.
When she appeared on the ITV show with co-star Ben today, she was asked, “So what’s the situation? How is Derek?”
“Well I couldn’t see him Ben,” said Kate. “I haven’t seen him since Christmas, which of course means he’s back in a situation where he’s looking at strangers in masks. And I think that’s the situation for everyone, they have someone in the hospital right now who it is not unique.
“It’s tough. It’s the same for people in nursing homes, too. And when you’re someone like him dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to show up, I can’t help but fear that it won’t help.”
Ben said, “Because it helps to have people he knows …”
“I think it is,” agreed Kate. “And of course that is very difficult and there is no end in sight.”
She also talked about the reason for the release and said, “I’ve been taking time off. On ITV they kindly gave me a break. I haven’t been feeling very well – I think it might be one of those things that chickens come home to sleep after a long year we’ve all had. “
“I just took vacation – at home, I know vacation is controversial – within the four walls of my house. I had a lot of sleep and a little medicine and felt a lot better, thank you.”
