Kensington Palace has released a series of new pictures of Kate Middleton for her 40th birthday.

The Duchess of Cambridge dresses in stunning red to celebrate a ruby anniversary – her 40th birthday on Sunday.

The strapless number was one of three dresses Kate wore for photos for the occasion, all from the Alexander McQueen fashion house, that resulted in her 2011 wedding dress.

In two settings, Kate combines flowing white dresses with earrings from Princess Diana.

The gems she wears with her scarlet dress were borrowed from the queen.

And for all portraits she uses a natural English rose look with light make-up.

The photos are part of the Coming Home exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

They are exhibited in several places of significant importance to the Duchess.

People will have the opportunity to see the paintings in Berkshire, where Kate grew up, in St Andrews, where she met Prince William, and in Anglesey, where the royal couple shared their first married home.
