Keir Starmer speaks out to reveal real reason he sacked Rebecca Long-Bailey

Sir Keir Starmer has issued a fresh statement after Rebecca Long-Bailey was dramatically sacked from Labour’s shadow cabinet.

Ms Long Bailey was removed from her role on Thursday after sharing an article containing an allegedly anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

In an update, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “The sharing of that article was wrong, because the article contained anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

“I have therefore stood Rebecca Long-Bailey down from the shadow cabinet.”

In comments reported by the BBC he said: “I’ve made it my first priority to tackle anti-Semitism and rebuilding trust with the Jewish community is a number one priority for me.”

Mr Starmer took action after Ms Long-Bailey tweeted a link to an interview with the actress Maxine Peake in which she claimed the police linked to the death in the US of George Floyd had learned their tactics from the Israeli secret services.

Ms Long-Bailey – a staunch ally of former leader Jeremy Corbyn – praised Ms Peake as “an absolute diamond”.

She later issued a further tweet saying she had shared the article because of Ms Peake’s “significant achievements and because the thrust of her argument is to stay in the Labour Party”.

She added: “It wasn’t intended to be an endorsement of all aspects of the article.”
