The pair of cats were seized by the charity, who are conducting health checks and assessments.

If prosecuted and convicted, Zouma faces punishments ranging from a ban on owning animals to a jail sentence.

Zouma’s brother Yoan, who plays for Dagenham and Redbridge, has been suspended by the National League club.

West Ham said Zouma had been fined the “maximum amount possible” – two weeks’ wages, reported to be in the region of £250,000 – which will be donated to animal welfare charities.
