Largest vaccination campaign in UK history saw 132 million Covid jabs given last year

In the largest vaccination campaign in the history of Great Britain, 132 million Covid vaccinations were administered last year, according to new figures.

More than 90 percent of people over the age of 12 in the UK have now received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine – 82.4 percent had their second.

With the advent of the Omicron variant, its rollout was sped up over the Christmas season and more than 1.6 million people received their booster dose in the last week of 2021.

These last-minute vaccinations brought the total number of refreshed adults in the UK to 34 million, including three in four eligible adults in England.

Health Minister Sajid Javid thanked the NHS staff and tens of thousands of volunteers for the success of the implementation since December 2020 and urged more people to get their booster vaccinations in the New Year.

He said, “The Covid-19 pandemic was one of the greatest challenges our healthcare system has ever faced, and our historic vaccination program has helped us meet that challenge.”

Mr Javid added that “132 million vaccinations in a single year are amazing and reflect the fantastic work of our NHS and its volunteers” and said, “I would like to thank each and every one of you.

“But we have to make sure that people continue to sign up for their lifesaving sting.

“As we move into the new year, make sure you get ‘Get Boosted Now’ to start 2022 with the best possible protection from Omicron.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had set himself a goal of giving all eligible adults the opportunity to receive their top-up shots by the end of January, but with the advent of Omicron, he moved the deadline forward to the New Year.

Millions of Britons stood in line at around 3,000 vaccination centers, and on December 18, the NHS England gave a record 830,000 vaccinations in a single day.

The acceleration of the program was helped by 750 armed forces personnel, and the government suspended the 15-minute observation time after Pfizer and Moderna boosters for most patients.

Vaccine Minister Maggie Throup urged more adults to sign up in the New Year, calling the introduction a source of national pride.

Ms. Throup said, “The UK’s Covid-19 vaccination program is something we can all be proud of – it has protected tens of millions of people from this deadly virus over the past year.”

Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows that unvaccinated people are up to eight times more likely to be hospitalized than those who are fully vaccinated.

Coronavirus cases continue to rise worldwide, and according to ONS data, one in 25 people in England had the virus last week. In London that number increases to every 15th
