Could the new iPhone cost more?
In a new report Digitimes announces that Apple will raise prices for the iPhone 13 after TSMC, its largest chip supplier, received a notification that production costs would increase. In addition, the change seems to have an impact on every iPhone model.
Digitimes explains that TSMC will increase prices for “sub-7 nm process technologies” by up to 5% and “mature process technologies” by up to 20%. Like the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 13 models use a 5nm chip, so even with a predictable Apple markup on that cost, you’d think it has less of an impact. But that is only half the truth.
Even if Apple were to swallow the increased costs for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series, the “mature” 7 nm-based iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE (both of which should remain in stores) will see significantly greater growth. Accordingly, it says at Digitimes: “Apple will probably set higher prices for its upcoming iPhone and other series.”
