Home Secretary Priti Patel will chair the final press conference on Downing Street tonight.
The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will be attended by Martin Hewitt, Chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, and Dr. Vin Diwakar, NHS England Regional Medical Director for London.
Ms. Patel is expected to urge people across the country to strictly adhere to the current lockdown rules.
That news is due to be delivered today against the background of evidence that current restrictions aren’t working well enough to bring the numbers down.
Imperial College announced this morning that research shows the latest lockout rules are not working yet.
The Home Secretary is responsible for overseeing these rules – and warned people last week that the police would not hesitate to take action against those who do not follow them.
Research by Imperial College London and other companies shows that current coronavirus levels are still too high.
Boris Johnson was asked earlier today whether the lockdown might not be eased until the summer.
He told reporters, “I think it’s too early to say when we can lift some of the restrictions.
“We will then take a look at how we are doing (February 15), but I think what we see in the ONS (Office for National Statistics) data, in the React survey, we see the risk of contagion with the new variant Das we saw it just before Christmas – there is no doubt that it is spreading very quickly.
“It’s not deadlier, but much more contagious and the numbers are huge.”
