Prime Minister Boris Johnson will host another Covid press conference on Downing Street this afternoon.
Mr Johnson is joined by the English chief physician Professor Chris Whitty and the head of NHS England, Sir Simon Stevens.
The Prime Minister is expected to cover the tough new UK travel rules, as well as an update on when schools can reopen in England.
Passengers coming to England from high risk coronavirus hotspots are expected to be quarantined in hotels to limit the spread of new variants.
Vaccine Minister Nadhim Zahawi warned the country must be “very careful” of new strains emerging and said an announcement on the quarantine plans would come later.
He told Sky News: “There will be an announcement later today on the matter, so I can only tell you that it is the right thing to do because I am the vaccines minister if we vaccinate more of the adult population. If there are new varieties like the South African or the Brazilian variant, we have to be very careful. “
Home Secretary Priti Patel declined to comment on “speculation” about quarantine hotels when she answered an urgent question in the House of Commons.
However, she said the government will “not hesitate to take further action” to protect the UK from new strains and said “measures are always under review”.
The press conference starts at 5 p.m.
