A 27-year-old man was shot dead during a Peaky Blinders costume party on New Year’s Eve, police say.
The party host rang the doorbell with friends the New Year when one of his guests “accidentally” shot him in the chest while handling a hunting rifle in a remote home in southern France.
Pals desperately tried to save the man, but he was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived at the crime scene in Monbazillac in the Dordogne.
French officials said a group of former high school friends gathered for the theme party and dressed up as characters from the hit BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders, which stars Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.
The program, which is now shown around the world and available on Netflix, is set in Birmingham and follows the violent, armed Peaky Blinders gang after World War I.
Doctors and police officers were called to the house in Monbazillac at around 9:30 p.m. Thursday when the 27-year-old man was accidentally shot, French media reported.
It was reported that he was fatally wounded by a shot from a hunting rifle.
The 27-year-old man who was holding the gun at the time was one of several guests who brought guns to the party, the local prosecutor said.
The rifle belonged to his father, who is a hunter.
Also 27, this man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, France Bleu reported.
He remained in custody on Friday evening.
Many of the 20 partygoers knew each other from high school and were in their late 20s.
The incident took place in a garage while people were smoking outside, just hours before the clock struck midnight.
Police are treating it as an accidental shooting, local media said.
Bergerac prosecutor Odile de Fritsch said AFP: “About 20 people born between 1991 and 1993, all of them former high school buddies, gathered in a remote house on Thursday for a costume party inspired by this British television series that features gangsters in three-piece costumes and hats.
“At around 9:30 p.m., a shot was fired from a gun brought by a guest.”
