Man jailed for sex with chickens while wife filmed has sentence reduced

A “depraved” man who had sex with his pet chickens while his wife was filming him had his sentence reduced on appeal.

Footage of Rehan Baig having sex with the birds – who died as a result – was found on computer equipment confiscated from his home on Shepherd Street in Bradford, West Yorkshire, along with indecent pictures of children.

37-year-old Baig was jailed for three years at Bradford Crown Court last October after admitting to a range of criminal offenses, including sex with an animal, extreme pornographic imagery, and indecent photos of children.

His sentence was reduced to two years and four months in the London Court of Appeals on Friday after two senior judges concluded the original term was too long.

His lawyers argued that his sentence should be suspended so that he could be released from prison immediately.

But Sir Roderick Evans, hearing Baig’s appeal to another judge, said: “We are pleased that a significant and immediate sentence was necessary.”

The court heard that Baig’s crimes were discovered when National Crime Agency officials executed a search warrant on the family home in July 2019 after receiving news that he had naughty pictures of children.

Computer equipment was confiscated from the house and 49 indecent pictures of children were found – including 11 in the most serious category, some of which showed children as young as six.

Officers also found a “significant” amount of extreme pornographic images, including a number of “first generation homemade films” starring Baig and occasionally his wife, having sex with animals and filename “Family Vids”.

Some of the images showed the couple engaging in sexual activity with a dog, while others were “of some length” of Baig engaging in sex with chickens and, on occasion, his wife filming some of the footage on a cell phone Phone.

Judge Richard Mansell QC sentenced the couple in October, saying the acts would “make any right-thinking member of society sick”.

The judge described Baig’s insult as “depraved, perverse, and despicable” and said the making of the videos was “simply incomprehensible”.

Crown Court heard the pictures showed two of the dead chickens on the basement floor and another video showed Baig putting one of the deceased animals in a garbage bag. He was also filmed having sex with a chicken who had died.

Judge Mansell said, “The pain and suffering you inflicted on these animals must have been terrible.”

Prosecutors said the chickens started out as pets and all died as a result of Baig’s actions.

Baig admitted three cases where he took naughty pictures of children, three cases where he owned extreme pornography, three cases where he had sexual intercourse with an animal, and three cases where he owned controlled drugs.

He was banned from keeping animals and entered the sex offender registry for life.

His wife, Haleema Baig, 38, was given a six-month suspended sentence after admitting that she encouraged sexual intercourse with an animal against the background of coercion and control of her husband’s behavior.
