Man kept brother’s body on sofa for months as ‘he was afraid of being lonely’

A man lived with his dead brother’s corpse for months because he was afraid of being lonely.

Valeriy, 52, reportedly failed to find the strength to bury his 42-year-old brother Andrey after he died, possibly of a heart attack.

Instead, he slept near him and ate with the crumbling corpse for several months.

Local media reports that he treated his brother as if he were alive and kept talking to him. The deceased’s mummified body was eventually found in Novomoskovsk, Ukraine.

Valeriy explained his actions to police, saying he “lived with the body because he was afraid of loneliness”.

The shocking discovery was first made by worried neighbors who went to see the brothers after not seeing them for a long time.

Albina, a woman next door, reportedly said, “When we entered the house, we felt a terrible stench.

“A human figure was lying on the couch. It was covered with a blanket. When we threw the blanket aside, we saw a rotting human skeleton.”

Valeriy declared himself to his neighbors, saying that he “lived with his younger brother’s corpse because he didn’t want to be lonely”.

Albina added, “Valeriy slept and ate near the rotting corpse for several months.

“He treated his brother like he was alive and kept talking to him. He said he was afraid of loneliness.”

The neighbors called the police, who arrived at the scene before laying the mummified body off the couch on a carpet and carrying it outside to be taken to a morgue.

Speaking to officers, Valeriy said his brother had died of a heart attack.

Hanna Starchevska, the police spokeswoman for the police department of the Dnepropetrovsk region, is said to have said: “The man lived with his brother’s body for four months.

“A cursory examination revealed no evidence of violent death on the body. According to the current version, the victim died of natural causes.”

Officers said investigations to determine the cause of death were ongoing.
