A man who refused to give up his seat on a bus for a pregnant woman sparked an intense internet debate.
The passenger who drove to Reddit to ask if he was right was even beaten up by his own family for his reckless actions.
He said they were “completely insane”.
He told message board users that it was not “my fault that she decided to have a baby,” arguing that he had been on his feet all day for work.
He defended his position, saying he was on a 10-hour shift and had 20 minutes left on foot after the bus ride home.
He wrote: “So I was on the bus last night and a very pregnant woman got on. She looked around for a seat and realized that there weren’t any more available.
“I’m closest to her so she’s starting to give me those pleading eyes. I had my headphones on and was trying to pretend I couldn’t see her, but when she started talking to me it became inevitable.
“I wasn’t being rude or anything, I just told her no, I’ve had a long day and my feet are sore. I don’t want to give up my place.
“She started crying that she was a pregnant single mom and I told her I was sorry but that was her personal choice and she can’t expect other people to make her life choices.
“We live in a state where birth control and abortions are free. I don’t know why this should be my problem. It’s not my fault that she decided to have a baby when she can’t afford a car. “
He admitted when he got home to his family who couldn’t believe what he had done.
But still standing by his actions, he said, “I don’t know why we need to continue the idea that breeding somehow means you are entitled to people’s seats.”
Some Reddit applications were just as angry as his family.
More than 1.4,000 people responded to the post.
One said, “Did you know that heavy pregnancy really changes your balance, let alone that tired thing?
“No – you didn’t ask her to be pregnant, but you can, as an efficient, otherwise healthy person choose to be nice . A heavily pregnant person and an old person fell over as a selfish grumpy bastard. Also mention the contraception / abortion / breeding angle Really makes you a **.
“I bet you’re a real ‘nice guy’.”
One single mother replied, “Here there is a ‘choice’ to be a single mother who has to take the bus and yet his car accident is just an unfortunate situation. Really, if he didn’t want to deal with other people, he should really don’t do that. ” I should have made sure he had a car as his life choices hurt his feet. “
But some took his side.
One person said, “You don’t owe anyone who makes other life choices. If you totally agree, just because she’s pregnant doesn’t get her way, she could have gotten the seat from someone.” but otherwise decided to make a scene. “
