Martin Lewis' warning to people wanting to pay cash in supermarkets

Martin Lewis has provided some vital advice for those who might be considering paying cash in supermarkets.

The Money Saving Expert has helped consumers with a number of complicated problems from mortgages to credit cards as our finances can be a very confusing topic.

Some stores have turned down cash to stop the spread of Covid-19 and only allow cashless payments.

But Martin warned people that businesses have the right to refuse cash mirror Reports.

“No, they don’t break any rules,” he said on the Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV.

“You can only take cards as long as it is not discriminatory for race or disability or anything.”

But that begged the question of what exactly legal tender was.

“The legal tender thing is interesting,” said Martin.

“Legal tender has a strict definition.

“It means that if you have a court that has awarded debt against you, if someone is trying to reach a settlement and they are paying in legal tender, you cannot refuse.

“And that’s all it means.”

He pointed out that in some parts of the country the only legal tender is actually coins.

“No banknotes – neither the Bank of Scotland nor the Bank of England – are legal tender in Scotland.”

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t legal.

“They are all legal currency,” he added.

Martin had made an excellent point as to whether it was time to move to a cashless society.

“I know a lot of people say why don’t we just switch to a cashless society?” – I don’t want that because there are a lot of vulnerable people who need cash, “he said.

And there was good news for people who depend on cash but find it harder to come into contact with bank branch closings and ATM removal.

“The government has said that once we leave the EU in January, the rules will change, so if you want to get money out of a supermarket, you don’t have to buy anything,” he said.

“And with the closure of ATMs and bank branches that will come in handy.”
