“We still have a long way to go”
The World Health Organization is holding its own press conference.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director general, says “a vaccine alone will not end the pandemic”.
He told the board meeting of the global health authority, “Since the pandemic began, we knew that a vaccine would be essential to bring the pandemic under control.
“It is important to emphasize, however, that a vaccine complements, not replaces, other available tools.” A vaccine alone won’t end the pandemic.
“Initially, supply will be limited, giving priority to health workers, the elderly and other vulnerable populations.
“Hopefully this will reduce the number of deaths and allow health systems to deal with them.
“However, this leaves the virus a lot of room to maneuver – monitoring must continue. People still need to be tested, isolated, and cared for. Contacts still need to be traced and quarantined. Communities must continue to be engaged and individuals must continue to be cautious.
“We still have a long way to go.”
