Alex Murdaugh, 53, was attacked after stopping to fix a flat tire just months after his wife and son were shot dead in a mysterious double homicide at the family home in South Carolina
A multi-million dollar lawyer survived a headshot just months after his wife and son were killed in a mysterious double homicide.
Alex Murdaugh, 53, was attacked Sunday after stopping in a rural area in Hampton County, South Carolina to fix a flat tire, attorney Jim Griffin told The State.
A statement added that Mr Murdaugh was shot after a truck drove past him before he made a U-turn and someone inside opened fire.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) spokesman Tommy Crosby confirmed that Murdaugh was being rushed to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, where he was being treated for a “superficial gunshot wound to the head.”
A family statement said: “The Murdaugh family has suffered more than any family can ever imagine.
“We expect Alex to recover and ask for your privacy while he recovers.”
Mr. Murdaugh was a member of a well-known family of lawyers in the area and has issued a statement since the shooting apologizing to his family and friends for injuring them.
He also announced that he would be retiring from his law firm to begin rehab. WSPA reports.
In a statement released by his attorney, Dick Harpootlian, he said: “The murders of my wife and son created an incredibly difficult time in my life. I’ve made a lot of decisions that I really regret.
“I’m quitting my law firm and going into rehab after a long battle made worse by these murders.
“I feel immensely sorry for everyone I have hurt, including my family, friends, and co-workers. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.”

On June 7, Mr. Murdaugh found his wife Maggie, 52, and 22-year-old son Paul shot dead on his family’s hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina.
It came while Paul was awaiting trial of a 19-year-old woman’s boat death in 2019.
The police released the desperate husband and father’s tragic 911 call, telling the dispatcher, “My wife and child were badly shot” before desperately begging them to “hurry up.”

Mr Murdaugh told police that neither his wife nor son were breathing when he found them, but did not notice anything unusual in the house or on the grounds near the kennels.
The Murdaugh family are well known in South Carolina and have served as the area’s leading prosecutors for generations.
In 2019, the state reported that the family had put thousands of people in jail and put more than a dozen on death row.
No one was reportedly arrested in connection with the murders or shooting of Mr Murdaugh.
