A new record claims Mindhunter season 3 is back on the table, but how plausible is that the return of the Netflix hit?
The UK site Small Show cites an unknown source as saying that Netflix has revived conversations with Mindhunter author David Fincher to get a new season of this serial killer game after it was put on “indefinite hold” a year ago .
The website’s source claims “Talks are underway between Netflix and Fincher. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season.
“It’s still quite early,” they add, “but Fincher seems more optimistic about the job.”
Netflix hasn’t made an official comment, leaving fans to guess just how serious these Mindhunter season 3 rumors are.
On the other hand, they have some sense, as David Fincher spoke extensively around the first psuedo cancellation about how exhausting the series was for him and how he wanted to do something else, and Fincher is known to be the driving force behind the set. So the only way a new Mindhunter season would be plausible is if Fincher was willing to revisit Holden Ford, Bill Tench and Wendy Carr along the BSU.
However, anything from an unnamed source should always be taken with a grain of salt, and there are plenty of logistical hurdles before Season 3 can be seriously considered.
Even assuming the Small Screen report is correct, these conversations are old, meaning they might not lead to anything. Conversations take place all the time without necessarily leading to content creation; An example of this is Dick Wolf and NBC referring to the Law & Order: Hate Crimes spin-off, which is in development since 2018 but never actually released. In the previous report in 2019, NBC executives said it “will happen one day,” which seems a lot if the limbo Mindhunter aficionados happen to be in it.
Another problem is that none of the cast is under contract. When Netflix drew up the “indefinite waiting period” statement, they were also taken out of their contracts so they could find other jobs. The network and studio should get Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv back on board to generate Mindhunter season 3.
While the celebrities were open about how much they enjoyed doing the show, a new season doesn’t mean they actually could. It depends on whether they would be available when Netflix is willing to record the third season, or when they will be contractually tied to additional projects. Stars have had to turn off features all the time due to scheduling conflicts.
Looking at this as a case, there aren’t too many to get excited about. While the idea of David Fincher and Netflix talking about more Mindhunter is encouraging, a vague report isn’t a new season, especially when there are many steps between now and the making of Season 3.
