The rise in coronavirus cases due to the appearance of the Omicron variant has led to a sharp surge in demand for Covid tests – and made it clear that there are currently not enough tests. For the past few days, some Americans seeking tests have waited in line for hours.
Cardona said districts had billions in federal funds to set up surveillance test systems, but Brennan pointed out that many districts said they simply didn’t have tests. He suspected that some districts were surprised by the steep increase in cases from the new variant.
“We know this Omicron came quickly,” he said.
Cardona stressed that Covid testing is an essential part of efforts to keep students in their school buildings.
“The goal is to ensure that students and staff are safe in their classrooms,” he said.
