A mother is accused of killing her 5-year-old son by violently banging his head on the floor “because he caused a mess”.
The 25-year-old, identified only as Elena, is accused of attacking her son Artem until he stopped breathing during the incident at her home in the village of Sokolivka, central Ukraine.
The alleged attack reportedly occurred last week in front of the boy’s six-year-old sister, Diana.
Elena was reportedly later found holding her son’s body in her arms outside her home.
Vira Asaulenko, the village’s mayor, told the local media: “We came to see the family after the children did not go to kindergarten and school.
“We saw the mother in the yard of her house.
“She was holding Artem in her arms. The boy was wrapped in a blanket.
“I touched his hand. It was freezing.
“Diana was sitting on the floor. She didn’t say a word and stared into nothing without blinking.”
Paramedics announced the boy was already dead after arriving at the scene a few minutes later.
Oleksandr Korneichik, a medic who received the call, said, “We couldn’t do anything.
“The child had terrible bruises all over his head and symptoms of suffocation on his neck.”
Forensic investigations showed that Artem had died from severe head injuries.
Diana later told the police what happened.
Valentyn Savchuk, the local police chief, said: “The mother discovered a mess in the house and blamed the boy for it.
“She left him on the floor, sat on top of him and hit his head against the floor several times.”
The woman only stopped the brutal attack after the boy “stopped breathing” according to local media.
The police have started criminal proceedings for the murder of Elena, who is to be sent for psychological examinations.
According to the neighbors, the mother developed aggressive behavior towards others after the birth of her children.
Katerina Godovanyuk, a woman next door, said: “She was treated in a psychiatric clinic after each delivery.”
Elena was reportedly not officially recognized as mentally ill and allowed to raise her children.
It is believed that the village authorities were able to protect their parental rights and believed that “it would be better for children to live with her than in an orphanage”.
Artem was buried on Saturday.
His sister Diana is receiving psychological treatment and a court is due to decide her future fate soon.
If convicted, your mother faces up to 15 years in prison.
The investigation continues.
