A mother talked about the moment she watched in horror as a priest plunged her crying baby into the water during the baptism.
The cell phone video shows how the priest dipped the crying baby into the baptismal font several times during the religious rite in a church in Limassol, Cyprus, and hit the dead legs several times against the metal edge.
Mother Ntina Shitta went on Facebook after the ceremony and uploaded the disturbing clip and filed an official complaint the Greek reporter website.
In the video, the priest clumsily holds the baby by the arm and lifts it high above his head before submerging the baby.
The child screams in fear as his legs repeatedly hit the edge of the metal writing.
“We all yelled at him [the priest] to be careful, but he replied, “I am responsible for baptism,” Ntina said on her Facebook post, describing the priest’s actions as “terrible”.
“The baby blushed and was in shock! This priest ruined our most beautiful day. “
The parents have since filed a complaint with the church following the ceremony, claiming the baby was covered in red spots.
In a television interview on Sunday, the priest, Father Panagiotis Baroutis, apologized to the family but denied any willful misconduct.
“The truth is that at one point the baby almost slipped out of my hands and as you can see in the video, I put my arm under his hip to protect it.
“I had no intention of hitting or hurting the baby.
“I’ve baptized many children. When I realized the baby was under stress, I tried to complete the ritual as soon as possible.”
