Mum was stabbed to death while children were asleep upstairs, say police

A mother who was killed in a suspected double homicide in Somerset was stabbed to death while her children slept upstairs, police said.

An autopsy confirmed that Jennifer Chapple, 33, died of multiple stab wounds after an incident in Dragon Rise, Norton Fitzwarren, around 9:45 p.m. on Sunday. reports Somerset Live

Ms. Chapple and her 36-year-old husband Stephen Chapple were both found seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

Her two young sons, aged five and six, were found sleeping upstairs after the incident, police said.

The autopsy to determine the cause of Mr. Chapple’s death is pending, Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed.

The couple had previously quarreled with a neighbor about parking, local residents told the PA news agency.

Mr. Chapple taught computers at nearby West Somerset College while his wife worked in customer service at a garden center.

The couple’s youngest son had just started elementary school.

Gregg Mockridge, principal at West Somerset College, paid tribute to Mr. Chapple and said he was “unfortunately missing”.

He said, “Steve was a fantastic colleague at West Somerset College, a brilliant teacher who cared very much for the students in his care.

“He introduced innovations in the use of technology throughout the school as well as in his own teaching.

“Steve is sadly missed by all staff and students, and our thoughts and prayers at this time go to his children and family.”

Two men, aged 34 and 67, were arrested on Sunday evening on suspicion of murder.

The elderly man was released as part of the investigation, while judges granted an extension to a 34-year-old man.

Police lines remain on two lots on Dragon Rise while officers continue investigating them.

As a result of previous contact with the couple, Avon and Somerset Police Department contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Chief Investigator Detective Inspector Neil Meade said, “What happened to Stephen and Jennifer is absolutely heartbreaking and I cannot imagine the impact their deaths will have on their two children.

“Family liaison officers support both families and keep them informed of the progress of our investigation.

“I appreciate that there is significant interest in what happened and I would ask people not to speculate and think about the impact it could have on families.”

He added, “This is a tragic incident that has shocked the community and neighborhood officials are patrolling the area to calm things down. If anyone has any concerns about what happened, I would encourage them to speak to them. “
