A mother who lost 10 stones in 15 months was mistaken for her husband’s lover – after a friend failed to recognize her slim new figure.
Sarah Buchanan, 33, was morbidly obese – she toppled on the scale at 24st 11lbs and struggled to squeeze into a size 26.
The mother of four got a kick in the ass trying to get over the bulge when she was told she had diabetes and that she may need gastric bypass surgery from her family doctor in August 2019.
For the next 10 months, Sarah dropped the sandwiches and unhealthy snacks and started cooking homemade meals from scratch using fresh ingredients.
In overhauling her diet, she lost 10st 4lbs – and slim to 14st 7lbs. It can now slip into size 14 – and looks almost unrecognizable to friends and family.
One friend even believed that her husband Daniel, 39, a health care assistant, was first cheating on her when she spotted the couple in the village – and failed to recognize her friend after her impressive weight loss.
Sarah, a health worker from St. Austell, Cornwall, said, “We were waiting outside for my father to pick us up and my friend spotted us and thought Dan had another wife by his side.
“Then she realized it was still me.
“It was really fun and flattering.
“My husband has a new wife – in the truest sense of the word.
“Finding out the diagnosis terrified me and I knew I had to do something.
“I finally feel like the real me. I am happy.”
Daniel said, “I feel like I have a new wife.
“She looks so different that people thought she was a different woman, it’s pretty funny really.
“People just can’t believe how much she has changed.
“I’m so proud of her.
“It’s incredible that she has lost so much in such a short time.”
In August 2019, Sarah went for a health check-up that found she had diabetes.
“It was shocking, but it was scary when they told me I might need an operation,” she said.
“I wasn’t sure how bad I had gotten.
“It was worrying and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack any moment and I might not be there for my children.”
When Sarah heard the news, she knew it was time to make massive changes in her life.
She had eaten unhealthy food since childhood – with a preference for sandwiches and bread.
Since then, she has swapped the high-carbohydrate diet for healthy alternatives and exercised daily – like jogging and walking.
“I went from having two sandwiches for lunch to healthy soups and salads and actually exercising,” Sarah said.
“I started jogging on site for 10 minutes every day and gradually built it up.
“Now I can jog on the treadmill for an hour.”
Sarah had always been overweight and was bullied as a child.
“I was called ‘fat pig’ and ‘fat cow’, it was horrible,” she said.
“But now I feel great.”
Sarah’s diabetes has reversed and she is finally feeling “happy” and “healthy”.
“My son keeps hugging me and saying,” I can put my arms around you now, mom, “she said.
“I’m glowing now.”
