MELBOURNE, Australia – The defending champion of the Australian Open, Naomi Osaka, abandoned her semi-final game at a WTA tournament in Melbourne with an abdominal injury, so her opponent Veronika Kudermetova was able to advance to the final with a walk-through.

“I had a lot of fun playing here in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I have an abdominal injury that I need to rest and prepare for the Australian Open, ”Osaka said in a statement from Tennis Australia.

“Sad to have to withdraw from my match today due to an injury, my body got a shock when I played intensive matches in a row after the break,” Osaka later added on Twitter. “I’m trying to rest and see you soon!”

The Australian Open starts on January 17th.

Kudermetova will face second seeded Simona Halep on Sunday, who defeated Zheng Qinwen 6: 3, 6: 2 in the other semifinals of the Summer Set 1 event.
