Union leader Sir Keir Starmer has asked Prime Minister Boris Johnson to put new national Covid restrictions in place within the next 24 hours rather than implying that he will soon.
Sir Keir told reporters, “The virus is clearly out of control.
“And there’s no point the prime minister hinting that more restrictions will come into effect in a week or two or three.”
“This delay has caused so many problems.
“So, I say, bring these restrictions now, national restrictions, within the next 24 hours.
“That has to be the first step in fighting the virus.”
Union leader Sir Keir said: “It is inevitable that more schools will have to close.
“And the government needs a plan for children’s learning, but also for working parents.”
Sir Keir added, “The most important thing, in a way, is that national restrictions have to be put in place within the next 24 hours.
“Don’t let the prime minister say, ‘I will do it, but not yet,’ this is the problem he has raised so many times.
“Nationwide lockdown – the prime minister has hinted that this will happen, but he is delaying again. And we cannot afford that again.”
