The Nissan Leaf was the fastest selling car in the UK last year, taking just 17 days on average to leave service stations.
It’s only the second time that an electric vehicle has topped the annual list in the seven years online car marketplace Auto Trader has been producing.
The Fastest Selling Index tracks the speed at which a vehicle is expected to sell based on current supply and demand data, and the Leaf’s victory reflects a recent surge in demand for low-emission vehicles.
The top 10 also included the 2019 winner, the Renault Zoe. The conversion took an average of 20 days, making it the seventh fastest vehicle sold last year. Gasoline-electric hybrids Toyota Prius and Toyota Yaris also made the list, taking an average of 19 and 20 days to sell, respectively.
Electric vehicles overall are now selling much faster than in previous years. In December, sales took an average of 26 days, eight days faster than the average petrol car and 18 days faster than electric vehicles sold in early 2021. It is ahead of a 2030 deadline for the end of sales of new standard petrol and diesel cars.
The five fastest selling vehicles in 2021 were the 2016 Nissan Leaf (17 days), the 2016 Toyota Prius (19), the 2016 Mazda CX-5 (19), the Peugeot 3008 (19) and the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso from 2016 (20).
Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Commercial Product Director at Auto Trader, said: “It’s incredibly positive to see that for the second time in seven years that we’ve tracked the fastest selling used cars, a pure electric vehicle has made the top of the list stands for 2021.
“There has been a real breakthrough for electric vehicles in the UK in recent years, but 2021 has really been a big step forward in terms of increased demand. This was in part due to increased model choice and availability, as well as recent fuel shortages, which helped further accelerate consumer propensity to buy.”
When it comes to new electric vehicles, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has won the crown for Most Viewed Model on Auto Trader, beating out the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Volkswagen ID.3.
