One simple change to your working day can burn the same calories as '10 marathons a year’

Standing up more and avoiding prolonged sitting during the day could help people burn the same amount of calories as 10 marathons over a year.

As reported in the Daily express, emphasized Dr. Michael Mosley on his BBC Radio 4 Podcast: Just One Thing – The Benefits of Getting Up More.

Dr. Former doctor and inventor of the Fast 800 rapid weight loss program, Mosley is known as an expert on weight loss. He explained that sitting for long periods of time can be “incredibly bad” because it leads to “some pretty nasty” health problems.

“I’ve been sitting at my desk for about an hour now, trying to do something,” began Dr. Mosley the podcast. “I’m about to do something that could really have a long-term impact on my health by lowering my blood sugar and burning a surprising number of calories.

“It’s that simple, I get up. I’m not going to walk the dog or do my beloved squats. I’m just standing here. “

While standing up is a simple exercise that can be easily done at home or in the office, Dr. Mosley that it can burn a “surprising” amount of calories. That equates to more than 10 marathons in one year.

Dr. Mosley went on to discuss the research behind the claim.

“A few years ago I was involved in a study where we asked office workers to stand an additional three hours a day for a week,” he said.

“We found that just standing up raised your heart rate so much that one of the researchers calculated that adding it over a year would burn the same calories as running about 10 marathons.”

But standing is not only a great way to burn calories, it can also boost your health and metabolism, and it can even be good for your body in many ways.

Getting up is also important because, according to the doctor, the alternative of sitting for longer is “incredibly bad for us”.

“In the UK, many of us spend 10 hours or more on our bums every day, and unfortunately that comes with some pretty nasty health consequences, including an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even death from all causes.”

He cited a study from the 1950s that found that bus drivers are twice as likely to have heart attacks as bus conductors because they had a more sedentary role in which they sat for most of the day.

Dr. Mosley warned that even people who exercise regularly may not be able to reverse the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

“By now you might be thinking that it is okay to spend a lot of time on your bum as long as you lead an active life outside of work. But that is not the case.

“New evidence suggests that unless you exercise at least 40 minutes of moderately vigorous exercise a day, you cannot undo the damage that prolonged sitting does.

“Worse, sitting for long periods of time actually diminishes the benefits of exercise. You just have to interrupt the time you spend sitting. “

So how much time should we get up during the day? According to Dr. Mosley can help a few minutes every hour.

On the podcast episode titled “Stand Up,” guest John Buckley, Professor of Applied Exercise Science at University Center Shrewsbury, added his recommendations on how often we should stand.

“At work [stand up] at least two or three times in an hour for a few minutes. Just get up

“Remember to move and stand up as often as possible,” he added.
