Opening G-20, King Salman calls for ‘global response’

The world’s richest economies need to help poorer nations cope with the coronavirus crisis and related economic shock, King Salman of Saudi Arabia said Thursday and opened an extraordinary video conference of the G20 leaders.

“We need to have an effective and coordinated response to this pandemic and restore confidence in the global economy,” said Salman, according to a Saudi Arabia protocol that chaired the G-20 and organized Thursday’s call.

“The Presidency welcomes countries’ policies and measures to revitalize their respective economies, including stimulus packages, precautionary measures, sectoral policies and job protection measures,” said Salman. “Despite the importance of a country’s individual responses, it is our duty to strengthen cooperation and coordination in all aspects of the economic policy adopted.”
