Unverified footage that appears to show the plane grounded has surfaced on social media

A passenger broke into the cockpit of an American Airlines jet at an airport in Honduras as the plane boarded for a flight to Miami, it is said.

Pictures on social media show a man sticking his head out the cockpit window and shouting at Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The man stepped into the cockpit and damaged the flight controls before apparently attempting to jump out of the window.

Crew members intervened and the man, who was not immediately identified, was arrested by local authorities, American Airlines said in a statement.

There were no reports of injuries.

The man was arrested and taken away by the authorities at the airport

The damage to the aircraft was assessed and eventually the flight was canceled and passengers were transferred to later flights.

“We congratulate our outstanding crew members for their professionalism in handling a difficult situation,” said American Airlines.

The damaged aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 with 121 passengers and six crew members, was stationed at Ramon Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the airline said.

A replacement aircraft was on its way to Honduras and was scheduled to depart at 9:30 p.m. local time.
