Pensioner and teen killed in police chase crash on motorway

A teenage boy and a pensioner were killed in a highway accident after being followed by police.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) opened an investigation into the collision on the M60 near Stockport, Greater Manchester on Thursday evening.

A police patrol is believed to have spotted a black BMW believed to have been stolen, which is driving on Altrincham Road towards Sharston Link in Manchester at around 10:15 pm, according to the IOPC.

A chase began when the 18-year-old male driver of the BMW did not stop for officers and continued to the M56 and then the M60 before exiting at Exit 27.

The BMW then came back on the M60 but on the wrong side of the lane towards the incoming traffic and hit a red Vauxhall vehicle being driven by a 77-year-old man. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, the IOPC said.

An IOPC spokesman said, “Unfortunately, two men lost their lives as a result of this collision. Our thoughts are with their families at this time.

“We believe there may be some witnesses on the road who witnessed the persecution. In particular, we love to hear from anyone who has dashcam material that may aid our investigation. “
