The chaos surrounding the 2020 elections meant that one story often drowned out the other before we had time to process anything. For example, the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast planned to produce an audio documentation report in March 2020 detailing the 72 hours between the South Carolina primary and Super Tuesday when then-candidate Joe Biden went from underdog to practically suspected candidate.
It never happened. The pandemic has locked us down and completely turned our coverage plans upside down. And this isn’t the only time we’ve torn up our 2020 plans.
In this episode of the podcast, Galen Druke reflects on these key moments in the 2020 race with the authors of the new book in retrospect and with some time to breathe. “Luck: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency.” The book is the first major report on the 2020 campaign in its entirety, and was written by Jonathan Allen, senior political analyst at NBC News, and Amie Parnes, senior correspondent for The Hill.
