Professor Sir Mark Walport, member of the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (Sage), said it was “fairly clear” that tighter restrictions were needed.
When asked if Tier 4 restrictions are enough, the former science advisor to the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show said, “It’s the Tier 4 restrictions, they obey them.”
“It’s about breaking through essentially every possible transmission path we possibly can.
“Those are the things that are absolutely necessary and it is pretty clear that we will need more.”
Boris Johnson also signaled that current anti-Covid measures are likely to get tougher.
He said, “What we’re doing now is the tiering system, which is a very tough system … and unfortunately it’s probably going to be more difficult to keep things under control.
“But we’ll check it out.”
He added, “And we have the prospect of tens of millions of dollars in vaccines hit the market.
“And that, I think, is something that should keep people in what I predicted when I was on your show in October is going to be a very bumpy time right now.
“It’s bumpy and it’s getting bumpy.”
Boris Johnson said circuit breakers “give you some temporary rest” after the spread of Covid-19.
He told the Andrew Marr Show, “If you want to stop the coronavirus from spreading, you or any government are of course free to shut down the entire economy permanently.”
“If you look at all of these fire or breaker examples, they are just buying you a temporary break.”
