The royal couple wanted to pay tribute to the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.
Meghan and Harry’s tribute came as other world leaders celebrated the anniversary.
The Queen previously said in a message to President Joe Biden, “My thoughts and prayers – and those of my family and the nation as a whole – remain duty with the victims, survivors and affected families, as well as first responders and rescue workers who have been called.
“I have fond memories of my visit to the World Trade Center site in 2010.
“It reminds me that in honoring those of many nations, faiths, and backgrounds who have lost their lives, we also recognize the resilience and determination of the communities that have come together to rebuild.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson also paid tribute to the victims of the terrorist attack.
“The fact that we come together today – in grief, but also in faith and determination – shows the failure of terrorism and the strength of the bonds between us,” Johnson said on a recorded message.
He added: “Twenty years ago, September 11, 2001 became, in the words of President Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor, a ‘date to live in shame’.”
