Britain’s Prince Harry said Thursday that social media would create a “crisis of hate” and called on companies to reconsider their role in advertising on digital platforms.
In an opinion piece for US business magazine Fast Company, titled “Social Media Divides Us. Together We Can Reshape It,” Harry said he and his wife Meghan had been calling corporate executives and marketing directors over the past few weeks.
“Companies like yours have an opportunity to rethink their role in funding and supporting online platforms that fueled, fueled, and created the conditions for a hate crisis, a health crisis and a truth crisis,” wrote Harry.
He didn’t name any companies.
Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth, called for online communities “to be defined more by compassion than hatred; by truth rather than misinformation; by justice and inclusiveness rather than injustice and scare tactics; by free rather than armed language.”
Harry and Meghan, formerly known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, now reside in Los Angeles after stepping down from royal roles in March to forge new careers.

They left the UK after media hostility increased.
In a speech last month, Meghan urged teenage girls and young women to be certain to drown out sometimes “painfully loud” negative online chatter.
In his statement, Harry urged companies to use their advertising dollars “to encourage change in places that provide a safe haven and a means of dissemination for hatred and division”.
