Prince: 'There has never been a time as uniquely challenging'

The Prince of Wales has warned that “there has never been a time as uniquely challenging as the present” and that the coronavirus crisis would leave more young people in need of assistance.

Charles wrote in the Sunday Telegraph that the challenge of helping those in need was “undoubtedly great, but … not insurmountable”.

“This is a difficult time for anyone – but it is an especially difficult time to be young,” he said.

“I’ve always had the feeling that it is the young people who have had the toughest experiences who have the most to offer society.”

Charles’ charity, the Prince’s Trust, was founded in 1976 to provide opportunities and life skills to vulnerable young people.

The prince said it was “humbling” and “extremely encouraging” to see such people meet their challenges and support younger generations in their communities.

“This is the virtuous circle that I always hoped would be reached,” he said.

“In all the years since the Trust was founded, there has never been an easy time.

“However, there has never been a time as uniquely challenging as the present, when the pandemic has left perhaps another million young people in dire need of help to protect their futures.

“The task ahead is undoubtedly enormous, but not insurmountable.”

Immediately after the pandemic, the Prince’s Trust set up the Young People Relief Fund to provide additional support to young people affected by the effects of the virus.

Charles said he was “more moved than I can say” by the network of supporters, partners and donors and their “persistent, overwhelming generosity and compassion.”

He also praised the achievements of the young people involved in the trust, whose “courage, determination and enthusiasm” motivated the trust’s ongoing work.

“They are an honor to themselves, their families and their communities, and our society is so much richer for what they have accomplished,” he said.
