Prince William pays tribute to 'grandpa'

The Duke of Cambridge has issued a statement paying tribute to his “grandpa”, the Duke of Edinburgh.

In a statement, Prince William said: “My grandfather’s century was determined by service – for his country and the Commonwealth, for his wife and queen, and for our family.

“I am glad that I not only had his example to guide me, but also his permanent presence well into my own adult life – both in good times and in the most difficult days.

“I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her.

“I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great grandfather, who picks them up in his car and convinces himself of his infectious sense of adventure and his mischievous sense of humor!

“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and support the Queen for years to come.

“I’ll miss my grandpa, but I know he wants us to get on with work.”

Kensington Palace shared a touching new photo of a young Prince George with his great-grandfather Philip in addition to the message from William.

George, a future king, sits next to the Duke in the box seat of a carriage while Philip holds the reins and a whip.

George, dressed in shorts and a knitted sweater, holds open a picture book.

The picture was taken in Norfolk in 2015.

The picture of George and Philip was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge.
