Prosecutors 'informed' after girl, 4, found at sea on inflatable unicorn

The Greek Coastguard has ‘informed’ prosecutors after a four-year-old girl was found drifting out to sea on an inflatable unicorn.

Shocking footage of the youngster drifting out to sea in the Gulf of Corinth, Greece, went viral last month.

The child was rescued by hero ferry captain Grigoris Karnesis, who said the child was ‘frozen in fear’ as her inflatable bobbed around in the strong currents.

The Greek Coastguard told Mirror Online the Prosecutor’s Office of Messolonghi has been informed about the case.

However, no action has yet been taken against the child’s parents, who are Greek.

They raised the alarm about their daughter after losing track of her while she was playing with the inflatable, local media claimed.

Port authorities in the town of Rio received a report about the missing four-year-old at around noon.

They added: “(She) was carried away due to the sea currents and was moving away from Antirrio beach

“Officials of the relevant Port Authority informed the passing ships of the ferry line Rio – Antirrio to provide assistance.

“The Salaminomachos, which was operating a scheduled route from Rio to Antirrio, safely approached the girl, collected her and handed her over to her parents when the ship arrived.”

Mr Karnesis and his crew were shocked to find the girl floating in the water around half a mile from the shore.

He was approaching the Port of Antirrio at around noon when the port authorities told him about a child being swept out to sea.

The captain told  Protothema:  “The little one was not cool. She was frozen from her fear because the current was very strong.”

Extraordinary footage shows the crew waiting for the inflatable to float towards them, before lifting her and the ‘unicorn’ out of the water and onto the ship.

According to Greek City Times,  Mr Karnesis added: “I put the ship in such a position so as not to affect the small buoy, I placed it in such a way that the ship was not affected by ripples, because if the buoy sank we would have serious problems.

“We approached it slowly and we were able to rescue the child.”

The girl was so terrified she cried when she saw the ferry approach her and did not speak at all.

Mr Karnesis said the crew made silly faces and cracked jokes to relax and calm the girl before she was reunited with her parents.

The captain was congratulated for his heroism in a personal phone call from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
