Puerto Rico will host show's first Spanish-language New Year's Eve countdown

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – This year, for the first time, a Spanish-speaking countdown will be included on Dick Clark’s New Years Eve Rockin ‘Eve with Ryan Seacrest, the governor of Puerto Rico announced on Thursday.

The segment will be broadcast from the US territory of Puerto Rico, where, according to Governor Pedro Pierluisi, thousands will gather in the island’s main convention center in the capital, San Juan.

The countdown is one hour before New York’s because Puerto Rico does not use daylight saving time.

Officials said the event will cost an estimated $ 3.6 million and will be paid for with federal funds intended to offset the blow from the pandemic. Pierluisi defended the use of these funds, saying it was an economic development event aimed at promoting Puerto Rico.

The ABC special airs from Times Square in New York City. It’s the show’s 50th anniversary.
