Russian President Vladimir Putin has fueled a new arms race by claiming the state is “on alert” with hypersonic missiles that can wipe out US cities and five times faster than American weapons.
Vladimir Putin has ICBMs “on alert” that are more than five times faster than the US and capable of wiping out American cities, the Russian leader said.
President Putin’s boast that the Russians have hypersonic weapons that are also intercontinental has fueled fears of a military conflict with the United States and a possible third world war with the West.
At the same time, he casually denied that they wanted to threaten someone at an energy forum in Moscow, saying that similar systems are being made elsewhere.
“This is not just a hypersonic missile, this is an ICBM,” he said.
“It’s a much more serious weapon than you just said. And in Russia they are already on the alert. “
He added, “There is nothing unusual here. The world’s high-tech armies will have such systems, and they will in the near future.
“We don’t abuse that, we don’t threaten anyone.”
Earlier this month, Russia announced that it had successfully launched its new zircon hypersonic missile from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine.
A video showed the 6,670 km / h missile darting into the sky from the White Sea and hitting a target in the Barents Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed.
An official statement said the Mach 9 missile was “unstoppable” as it could be launched from a submarine, which poses an additional threat.
As the world experiences another arms race, China and North Korea are developing hypersonic missiles, and the US has stated that they have a weapon that can reach more than five times the speed of sound.
Last month it was said to have successfully tested an air-breathing hypersonic weapon.
Arms race countries pump money into hypersonic weapons because they slow opponents’ reaction time and traditionally block them.
In July, Russia said it had successfully tested a zircon hypersonic cruise missile, a weapon that Putin is touting as part of a new generation of missile systems unparalleled anywhere in the world.
