Vladimir Putin’s best-known critic, Alexei Navalny, is hospitalized for fear that he may be on the verge of death.
The 44-year-old opposition leader has been on a hunger strike since March 31. Doctors warn that he could “die at any moment”.
The opposition leader’s doctor Yaroslav Ashikhmin and Anastasiya Vasilyeva, head of the doctors’ union, said they had been refused entry to the Pokrov prison where he is being held.
Dr. Ashikhmin wrote on Facebook: “Our patient could die at any moment.”
Yesterday US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned that there would be “consequences for Navalny’s death” and told CNN that Russia was “being held accountable” by the international community.
Navalny’s allies said over the weekend that his life was hanging by a thread and announced plans for what will hopefully be the biggest protests in modern Russian history on Wednesday.
