When the G7 leaders gathered in Cornwall today, the Queen may have put the question to most.
The monarch joined them for a socially distant photo and joked, “Are you supposed to look like you are enjoying yourself?”
Used to calm the most nervous guests, the Queen’s joke came when the President and Prime Minister smiled at the camera during a photo after an evening reception.
After a day of political talks, the monarchy’s “gentle diplomacy” became apparent when three generations of the royal family gathered to welcome the leaders to Cornwall.
The Queen hosted an open air reception at the Eden Project in Cornwall and was accompanied by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
William and Kate attend their first G7 events – another milestone in their development as senior royals.
The leaders, from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden, many with spouses, were pictured talking to the royals.
The monarchy does not exercise power but does influence and uses so-called “soft diplomacy” to help Britain renew and strengthen friendships with its allies and partners around the world.
After the 40 minute reception, they moved into an area to take a socially distant group photo, and after taking their seats and posing for a few moments, the queen said, “Are you supposed to look like you are enjoying yourself? ? “
The Queen’s leaders laughed and Prime Minister Boris Johnson said an emphatic “yes”.
Mr Johnson, who is hosting the Cornwall summit, added: “We enjoyed ourselves – despite the appearances.”
Ms. Merkel went to the queen and thanked her for posing for the photo with the words: “Thank you for doing this for us.”
