Her message read: “I wish the Duchess of Cambridge a happy 40th birthday today!” She also added a red balloon emoji.

Two of the snapshots show Kate and the Queen making royal commitments together, and a third shows them cutting a cake at an event with Camilla.

The last shot shows the Queen with Kate, Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte at Trooping the Color.

The Queen also shared the three new photos Kate shared on her Instagram stories to mark the day.

The Duchess is spending the day with her closest family and friends and is expected to have a big party with Will later this year. The Duke will be 40 years old in June.

The Queen is expected to host the party, with Windsor Castle or Sandringham being among the likely venues.

Similar lavish celebrations were previously held to celebrate important birthdays of several family members at the same time.

A grand festival was held in Windsor in June 2000 to celebrate the 40th birthday of Prince Andrew, the 50th of Princess Anne, the 70th of Princess Margaret and the 18th of William.

A source told the Mirror: “This year is a very humble occasion for the Duchess who is going to celebrate privately with her family.

“Of course she is aware of the current situation. She will be surrounded by loved ones and that is all that matters. “
