Radio DJ Simon Bolton dies aged just 54 after being taken to hospital with Covid

Radio star Simon Bolton tragically died on Christmas Eve at the age of only 54.

The Teesside radio host died on December 24th after being hospitalized with Covid.

Zetland FM said in a statement on Boxing Day: “It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that our Zetland FM colleague and friend Simon Bolton has passed away.

“Simon died on Christmas Eve after a very brief illness.

“Simon has been part of Zetland FM since our launch in 2015 and has done many shows including our Monday Sports Show, Weekend Breakfast, and Friday Rock Show.

“Recently, Simon’s regular ‘Radio Revivals’ program on Zetland FM demonstrated his great passion for music from all genres and eras as well as his immense knowledge of bands and artists.”

It goes on: “His favorite band were the Beatles, and whenever he was on the air he always tried to squeeze a track from them into his show.

“Born and raised in Redcar, Simon attended Sacred Heart School from 1979 to 1984 and was involved in organizing a reunion for former students in 2017.

“He was also a lifelong fan of Middlesbrough Football Club and many people will know him from his longstanding involvement with Boro Supporters Club.

“Simon was also a huge fan of films, especially the ‘Star Wars’ films, as well as many other films as a regular at the Regent Cinema in Redcar.

“For the past few years, Simon’s life has been marked by health problems and he has been working hard to start his weekly program for Zetland FM at his home in Redcar.

“Simon will be deeply missed by all of his colleagues, friends and listeners at Zetland FM and we extend our condolences to his wife, Joanne, daughter Leyla, family and friends.”
