Recap: Matt Hancock makes Covid statement to the nation

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock made his second Covid statement of the day on Downing Street this afternoon.

Mr Hancock appeared in Parliament this morning to confirm that the Indian variant of coronavirus is spreading across the country and that it is too early to confirm June 21, which is the target for the full lifting of restrictions in England has been.

He also fought back a day after he was personally attacked by Dominic Cummings – the man who was Boris Johnson’s closest advisor at the start of the pandemic – for dealing with the Covid crisis.

Mr Cummings said Mr Hancock lied to colleagues and played “catastrophic” in the first few months of Covid.

The former Downing Street chief of staff, who apologized for his own shortcomings, also claimed that the prime minister was “unsuitable” for the job and that “tens of thousands of people died who did not have to die” because the government made mistakes.
