Rescuers in Morocco race to save Rayan, boy trapped in well

Crews in Morocco raced to rescue a 5-year-old boy trapped in a well more than 100 feet deep since Tuesday.

The scene was played in several livestream videos, which were viewed worldwide via platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

The boy, identified only as Rayan, fell into the well on his family’s property near the village of Ighran in Chefchaouen province on Tuesday night, local reports said.

His immediate condition was not clear, although local publication Le360 Breathing was reportedly detected and oxygen was pumped to the area of the well where he was located.

The publication said a remote-controlled camera was lowered near Rayan and is helping rescuers monitor his condition.

Medical staff from the Kingdom’s Ministry of Health were ready to treat the boy and a helicopter was ready to fly him to the nearest medical facility, sources said state media.

A parallel hole was dug almost to the depth of the well overnight, state media reported, and Le360 said an additional horizontal tunnel would need to be created to reach it.

According to the publication, there was a setback on Friday when debris filled the parallel hole, delaying the effort for an unknown amount of time.

Live video from the scene showed several American-made Cat backhoes around the well, with rescuers also working by hand.

State media said the well was not fenced.

A man, identified by Le360 only as Rayan’s father, told the publication that the boy was with him when he was repairing the well.

“Rayan was next to me,” the father said, according to a translation. “At some point he fell. I didn’t notice.”
