Rock band Queen voted 'coolest' artists – while Cliff Richard tops 'uncool' list

You have a “cool” taste in music when you hear Queen, The Beatles – and, according to a survey, ED SHEERAN.

But your choice of melodies is considered “uncool” if you groove regularly to Cliff Richard, Daniel O’Donnell or Kanye West.

Singer Adele – whose new album is high in the charts – made it into the top 10 of the coolest artist list alongside Elton John and the Rolling Stones.

Trendy audio owned Billie Eilish only made it to number 23 on the cool list – while rapper Stormzy made it to number 28, just ahead of rockers Radiohead.

Other singers considered tragically un-hip include Robbie Williams and Madonna – with some artists making it on BOTH lists.

It also turned out that only one in three adults thinks their taste in music is “cool”.

But nearly half (48 percent) will turn up the volume in their car if they blow something they think is particularly trending.

The study of 2,000 music-loving adults was commissioned by, which enables independent artists to sell their songs and keep all the proceeds.

Peter Alfred-Adekeye, founder of LetterBox and MusicBox, says: “Taste cannot be explained, and what one person finds cool can be the exact opposite for another.

“But it’s still interesting to get a national consensus about which artists people think are either with him – or without him at all.

“Our musical tastes are very personal, and it can almost be seen as an insult if other artists don’t find them as cool as we do.”

The study found that 27 percent of people would like to admit that they hear “cool” music from other people.

But more than seven in ten readily admit that cheesy, deeply uncool music has a place in everyone’s life.

Three quarters think that there are some artists who can overcome all age and generation boundaries and stay cool forever.

And more than half (54 percent) are willing to give uncool artists a second chance because they believe it is possible to cycle from cool to uncool – and back again.

Rock was considered the coolest genre of music by 27 percent, while pop was the second coolest with 23 percent of the public vote.

Dubstep – very popular in the early 2010s – however, has shrunk to just four percent who consider it a cool genre of music.

Meanwhile, Sir Cliff Richard tops the list of the

But what makes an artist or a band cool? For 39 percent it is the courage to try something “different” with their music.

Another 35 percent believe that being cool is because they don’t care what other people think of them, and 24 percent believe that they need to be popular with a younger generation.

One in four adults would be “offended” if someone told them that their taste in music was not à la mode, according to the study by

When it comes to learning more about music, more than six in ten admit that they often discover great new sounds by listening to unsigned artists – but a third say these artists are not visible enough in the music industry.

Peter Alfred-Adekeye for added, “We were pleasantly surprised to see some of the artists as cool, we have to admit that.

“Those of us of a certain age will remember that Queen was always popular, but maybe now that the decades have passed, they are considered cooler than ever.

“It’s similar with Abba – their timelessly brilliant songs have lasted for 40 years and make them cool forever.”
